Bear River Whitewater Kayak Race & B.E.A. RiverFest

Where
The B.E.A.RiverFest will be held at the Bear River Greenway in Evanston, Wyoming (a short 1 hour drive from the SLC or Ogden). The kayak race will be on a one mile section of the Bear River on the NEW whitewater park within the greenway.

Cost
B.E.A.RiverFest admission: FREE Kayak races: $15.00, which includes tee shirt and ACA insurance coverage.

River Festival
Activities for adults, kids and families include: kayak races on the new whitewater park, 3 live bands, beer garden (featuring Boulder Beer), food vendors, art displays, quilt raffle, Bear River Greenway grand opening ceremony, tour of Bear River rehabilitation project, free kayak demos (Eskimo Kayaks-courtesy of Gordon Stam), free paddle boat, kayak and canoe rentals on Ice Ponds, story telling, crawdad catching contest and feast, kids scavenger hunt, wildlife and nature programs, and river and water safety workshop.

Kayak Races
There are two race categories: Time Trial and Boater Cross.

The Time Trial contest is simple: Kayakers will do a timed run solo down the length of the race course.

Boater Cross: Four kayakers start at once and race against each other and the clock the length of the course. The winner from each Boater Cross heat advances to compete against winners from other heats.

Racers will begin just upstream of the Interstate 80 bridge in Bear River State Park on the Bear River and end approximately one mile downstream, below the 6th Street Bridge in the Bear River Greenway. Racers will encounter class II and III- rapids and maneuver around boulders down the length of the restored Bear River through the Bear River Greenway. Spectators will enjoy the scenic beauty of the Bear River Greenbelt and Uinta Mountains, as well as feel the excitement of witnessing kayakers compete against themselves, the clock, and each other.

Rules
  • Plastic whitewater kayaks only.
  • All racers are required to wear suitable personal floatation device (PFD), helmet and clothing during race.
  • Start times determined by registration time.
  • Racers will start in one minute intervals in the time trials.
  • All racers shall complete one time trial to qualify for the Boater Cross competition.
  • The clock at the finish line will stop when the racer’s body crosses the finish line.
  • A one minute penalty will be added to any racer swimming across the finish line.
  • Four racers will start simultaneously for each Boater Cross heat.
  • Racers with the fastest time trial time will choose their starting location in the Boater Cross rounds.
  • The winner of each Boater Cross heat will advance to a subsequent Boater Cross heat.
  • No intention physical contact (paddle to paddle, person to person, person to kayak, etc.) is allowed in any heats of either race category. Unintentional contact is possible, but ramming is forbidden and will result in disqualification.
  • Intentional blocking of kayakers wishing to pass constitutes unsportsmanlike behavior and will result in disqualification.
  • The safety crew has final say on any emergency/safety situation. Any racer who blatantly ignores safety/race officials or shows disregard for their own or other’s safety, or exhibits unsportsmanlike behavior will be face disqualification for the entire event.


Awards Ceremony & Festivities
After the race, all racers and spectators will make their way to the Bear Community Center Pavilion just above the finish line, where other events and festivities, to include food, drink, and live music, will be in full swing. An awards ceremony will be held at the Bear Pavilion, where winners will be announced, and prizes donated by WASATCH TOURING will be awarded to the top two racers in each category.

Notice to all Competitors
The Bear River Riverfest race is for kayakers proficient in Class III whitewater. Kayakers are strongly encouraged to have an effective kayak roll and sufficient class III river experience to safely complete the race.

All competitors must be equipped with the appropriate kayaks, gear and clothing to sustain whitewater race conditions.
