This short beefy run lies beneath Hanging Lake Dam and Glenwood Spring's Shoshone Power Plant. The river paralells the bike path making it easy run to scount. This section of Glenwood Canyon is the most difficult section. Extremely fast and pushy water at high flows with very large waves at high water and sketchy rocks at lower water. Upper Death is a class V rapid and is only run at certain levels. Looks like death to me. Most people put-in below it or portage around it. Life After Death is the runout of Upper Death and the pool above is usually the start of it. Next comes Barrel Springs rapid. Finally you'll come to one more rapid worth mentioning just before the Shoshone Power Plant.

| | Put-In Exit 125 to Hanging Lake off of I-70 in Glenwood Canyon. Can only be reached by east bound traffic. | | | Side Note: Class I The gauge information presented here is mistaken, Barrel Springs was not running two days ago as the gauge site indicates, so therefore must be inaccurate. Seek better info before heading out to get some Barrel Springs action. | | Upper Death Class V+ A big, meaty drop through the bedrock that is about 100 yards below Shoshone Dam. The first move is a drop that pushes left around a big pourover, followed by a left-to-right move away from a cave and away from another pourover, and then down into the seam on river right or the boof on river left. There's a LOT of chunky rock hidden under the surface of this one, making it a pin machine, and the riverbanks are chock full of sieves. Set strong safety here and make sure you're on your A-game if you drop into this. It goes and is routinely run these days, but that still doesn't take anything away from how tough it is. | | Life After Death Class V- Life after death is a smaller and easier version of Upper Death, with a similar character but without the big drop. Most of the lines are down the middle, or are obvious when you need to go left or right. There sieves are present in this one, as is the pin potential, so use catuion. | | | Barrel Springs Class IV+ The real gem of this run, Barrel Springs is a long and technical but not too threatening class IV rapid just up around the bend from Shoshone Power Plant. With a big pool above and below, swims are usually only tough on the legs. The top part of the rapid is a narrow constriction between the highway and the railroad embankment. This narrowing creates a staircase of boofs and small falls. This funnels into a wide, shallow bouncy section. The channel is on the left, but at higher levels you can go wherever. Expect to hit a few unseen rocks. | | | Take-Out If doing this run individually the take-out is Exit 123 off of eastbound I-70. If run in conjunction with the Shoshone run, the take-out is at Exit 121 off of eastbound I-70. |
