This is the class 5 run in West Virginia, and one of the best boulder garden creeks on the east coast boasting numerous 4-8 foot boofs. While this run is super high quality it is more dangerous then any of the creeks in the surrounding area with lots of undercuts and sieves so be on your game for this one. This run has a very remote feel to it and has amazing scenery but once on the river getting out is very difficult. The first rapid on the run is called 100 yard dash and is about the same difficulty as the rest of the run so if you don’t like what you see get out while you still can. This run is a MUST do for any class 5 creek boater in the area.
Gauge info: 150-200: ELF levels. 200-300 is a good first time level none of the holes pack a serious punch but it is not manky either. 300-400 this is where it is at, holes start to get a little stick to them but there are still eddies and the mank is gone. @500 run starts to become fluid don’t do it unless you know it (Lower Blackwater good option).
This run is eligible for the EddyFlower Vertical Challenge. Go HERE to learn more.

| | Put-In Turn off hwy 32 at the sign for Blackwater falls state park, about a mile in the road will split take the left and follow it down until there is a bridge of the river. Cross the bridge and park in the parking lot on your right, then walk down to the river. (be discrete when changing) | | 100 Yard Dash (Phil's) Class V- One of the harder rapids on the run and a good gauge for the rest of the run. If you like what you see, its probably going to be a good day. If not, it was probably worth the hike just to see the put-in - a definite zen spot.
Peel out of the put-in eddy and five feet later is the 5 ft. railslide into an eddy. From the eddy, peel out, dodge the ninja rocks, and boof of anywhere but the center of the ledge below. Be careful - the hole below is fairly sticky and forms a stout pocket at higher levels. The second ledge is flushiest on the left side. | | | Take-Out Confluence with North Fork of the Blackwater (river right). Hike up the steep trail and up the old railroad bed until you reach your car. (Refer to North Fork put in for directions on where to park your car.) |
