After eight years of planning, prodding and praying, on May 7, paddlers in Pueblo, Colorado, will formally open their new downtown play park.
The Whitewater Park is located in downtown Pueblo. It's with-in walking distance of shops and restaurants in the Historic Downtown District between Union Ave. and the West 4th St Bridge.
The Pueblo whitewater park, which has not yet been formally named, is part of a larger renovation along the city's riverfront. It consists of eight drops separated by large pools over hafl a mile. Workers finished constructing the kayak park in mid-March and kayakers were testing the waves before the dust settled.
Murals along the cement bank of the river have led local paddlers to dub the holes with names like 1#Harpo gets you into the park,2# Marley 3# The Grim Reaper 4# Paddlers Hole 5# Sisters 6# Troubled Waters 7# Soul Keeper and 8# Corn Goddess.

The biggest hole at the park. At med and low flows <1500cfs its hard to get back in. At high flows <4000 it turns into a huge wave with a 10' foam pile, and perfect eddy service. When it gets this big stop whatever you are doing and get down there. This is by far the best wave I have surfed in Colorado.

Last rapid before put out. At low water it is very rocky. It has a diagonal flow toward the takeout that has a fun wave train.
Take-Out
Take out at Union Ave.
