The run starts with a 3 mile or so hike into the wilderness from the campground up to the bridge that crosses the river. You can put in at the bridge or go another 1/2 mile or so to get another nice warm up rapid in. Below the bridge is another warm up rapid before you hit the bigger stuff.
The big stuff starts with a few nice boulder drops that can be sticky at certain levels. These drops can be viewed on the hike up. Not long after these first couple drops you come to Six Pin, the biggest drop on the run. This is a class V at high flows. Just after six pin is 7-10. A fun move but into some pretty swirly water. After these the river mellows respectively, but is still continous.
The rest of the run is mostly read and run Class III-IV, the possiblity of wood is always a threat. You can see some of the run on the hike in and may be able to spot wood from the trail.
The last big corner has a good stretch of rapids, that may be a surprise, however you can see a chunk of this rapid from the road on the way to the campground. After this corner you are almost to the takeout, a few more small riffles and you will see the bridge, this is the takeout. You can go below this but the river falttens into cobble pretty quick and makes for a long shallow float. For an intro the the North Fork, you can put in at the campsite and take out at the bridge, or put in below Six Pin. The bushwack to put in directly below six pin is full of downed burned trees and is not fun, would recommend putting in at the corner that is right at the river if you want to put in below Six Pin. A super fun run with no crowds due to the hike.
Can have a short season. Run on the real low end maybe 500cfs and on the high end, use your best judgment. Wood is prone to collect due to many snow slides and the major fire that happened in this area.
Flow information:
Too Low: 0-500 Low: 500-850 Medium: 850-1400 High: 1400-1800 Crankin: 1800 and up

| | Put-In From Missoula--East/North on Hwy 200 past the Seeley Lake turn off, past Ovando until you see signs for NF Blackfoot, follow this road, and signs, to campground. You will pass over a bridge, this is the takeout, you can leave a car here, its about another mile to the trailhead from the bridge. In the early spring the campground may not be accesible due to snow slides, this increases the hike in. |
